Headed out to Guardians Peak in Stellenbosch first for wine tasting to get our roadtrip started. Wine tasting may not have been such a great idea seeing as one glass gets me smashed… 😛 but we ended up enjoying lunch there too before we hit the road again.
The wine tasting we chose consisted of four wines; Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Shiraz and something else. All of these were absolutely delicious, and that is saying ALOT coming from me who hates most wine! The 3 red wines were great for me! Not so great for Nick who prefers white wine… maybe should have checked what we’d be drinking first lol. Amateur wine peeps 😂
I ordered the tempura prawn and calamari with a side of sweet potato.. the food was fine but can’t say it blew me away.. I expected more. The service however was fantastic.
Next stop – Caledon Hotel and Spa!
Arrived just after check in at 2. Parked our car in the parking area and got a shuttle to the hotel by Eugene who is very efficient, professional and went out of his way to explain to us where everything is and how to get there. This was really great for us being our first time here. The staff at reception are also great – friendly, efficient and also very helpful in explaining the hotel, breakfasts, dinners, vouchers etc.
Our room is overlooking the gorgeous dams in front of the hotel with views for days. The mineral pools are cleaned and refilled every Monday so we needed to wait till after 5 to get access. Just before sunset is actually a great time to go to the pools! Exploring the pools in the gorgeous dusk light and enjoying the relaxation and sounds of the water running down the rocks as the sun sets and the pretty garden lights come on around you. What a romantic place for couples!
The pools get warmer the higher you go, so of course we started at the 2nd lowest one which suggests a maximum time of 15 mins. We soon moved up to the next for some more heat and stayed there for the allocated time of 10 minutes, enjoying the waterfalls running into the pools. Once more moved up to the fourth pool – this one is definitely the best:)) perfect temperature but recommended time is only 5 minutes! Nick jumped out to try the hottest pool while I happily stayed in my one. And this memory will be inside my head and make me laugh for as long as I live!! He stuck his foot in, kinda shrugged and then jumped in. Next thing I know he was flying through the air like a cat who’s just been put in water. I can’t even begin to explain how this kid jumped out hahaha. It was like seeing Jesus rise from the dead. No wings but he flew out of there like he was superman hahaha. Funniest moment of my life 😂😂😂
Looks like the top pool is a little too hot 😉
There are stunning changing and showering facilities by the pools, and small lockable cabinets for you to keep your things inside. I thought we would freeze once getting out the water but the pools are so hot you feel warm for ages afterward. It really looks like a tropical paradise here!
